Choosing the right reference photo is a very important step in the portrait process because I draw what I see—your portrait will only be as detailed as the photo provided! You’ll know that your photo is clear enough if, when you zoom in on the photo, you can see the direction and texture of the fur, the details of the nose, and the reflections in the eyes. And just as importantly, we want the photo to capture the nature and personality of your pet. When you book a commission portrait, I will ask you to email me several high-resolution digital photos and we will work together to decide on the best photo for your portrait.
Photo Selection
You may already have the perfect photo on your camera roll for your portrait, or you may need to take a new one. If you’re planning a pet photo shoot, I’ve complied some tips below to help you take the perfect photo!
Take the photo in good lighting. If possible, take the photo outdoors (a cloudy day is best!) or in a room with lots of natural light (avoid artificial indoor lighting and flash if possible).
Take a close-up shot. Get close enough to your pet so that they mostly fill the photo frame (this will ensure that your photo captures the details of the fur and eyes). Before snapping the shot, make sure your camera is focused on your pet’s face.
Get on the same level as your pet. Sit or kneel on the floor when taking the photo so your camera is in line with your pet’s face. This will ensure that their facial and body features are accurately proportioned. Do not take the photo from a standing position looking down at your pet. (When you do this, their body appears abnormally small and some of their facial features are exaggerated).
Choose a pose of your pet that is typical of their character. Try to capture your pet in a candid moment that captures their nature and personality.
Use bribery if needed! Treats can come in very handy for getting your pet to sit still!
